Pawanthorn Samui is an exclusive beachfront estate comprising of three luxurious and totally unique villas.
Each villa has a different theme of décor and influence, and each has been designed to fit around the natural landscape of the estate. The first follows a traditional Thai theme and has been named after the Thai national flower, Ratchaphruek. The second is based on the traditions, customs and architectural designs of the Chinese. This villa is also named after the Chinese flower of beauty, Mei.
The third and final villa takes it’s inspiration from India and is named after the national flower of India, the Lotus.
Each villa shares a naturally stunning location through which you are guided on a meandering stone pathway which leads through the grounds and directly onto a very beautiful and private beach area facing the island of Koh Matlang. The sandy beach is surrounded by naturally built rock formations providing a picture-postcard backdrop.
Set slightly elevated above the beach is a communal stone terraced area which provides an exceptional space for sunbathing. It is also a very large area which is perfect for group activities, parties and social functions.
The design of the villas, together with the landscaping, comes together to complement the natural beauty and harmony of the area.
The Pawanthorn Villas offer outstanding accommodation options in an extremely convenient location; ideally placed in terms of the airport, shopping and entertainment centres and with the kind of privacy which is increasing hard to find on Samui.
Accommodation
Ratchaphruek is the first of three exceptional residences which make up Pawanthorn, an exclusive beachfront villa development. Each villa has been constructed and dressed in a unique and specific theme. Ratchaphruek is in a Thai style;
Mei is a Chinese influenced villa and Lotus very much focuses on Indian styling.
The names have been carefully chosen to represent the national flowers of each of these nations, with the flower representing exceptional natural beauty and stunning details.
The first thing that strikes you as you arrive is the feeling of anticipation and expectation created by the stylish, natural stone-walled in and out driveway which circles a large water-feature at the entrance.
Looking at the villa from the outside makes you wonder exactly what’s hidden behind the walls, the landscaping and the imposing wooden gates. In fact the whole of Pawanthorn has an air of exclusivity and opulence. There’s a distinctive look of quality, but more than that is the attention to detail in every element of the outside space. Intricate pathways, tropically planted gardens, lighting, and the construction and architecture itself, all have something which draws your attention.
Ratchaphruek
You enter the Thai-style villa through heavy wooden gates which open into a breathtaking open courtyard. Steps lead you down to an entrance pool, complete with floating stepping-stone path leading through the pool to the villa entrance.
The pool has raised bronze statuette fountains and one side of the courtyard is made of a natural rock wall with plants seeming to rise from the pool in front of it. The other walls have a soft yellow tone which combines with the brown rock and the blue water to produce calm, relaxing and very grand, and yet welcoming, entrance area.
The eye-catching details here, other than the pool, the rock wall and the plants, are the beautiful metal and glass wall lamps which at night bring the area to life. There’s something very modern and stylish about the entrance, and yet the details all seem to be very traditionally Thai. This blend of quality materials and traditional Thai styling, with flashes of contemporary design, is mirrored throughout the property, resulting in an interesting environment which has something to please everyone.
Opening the main door and stepping inside the villa is an unforgettable experience. To say that there’s a wow-factor would be somewhat of an understatement. In fact, it’s impossible to take everything in at once, there’s one awe inspiring feature after another and, even after spending a considerable time in this room, you can expect to notice something that you’ve missed before.
The beauty of it is that all the architectural features, details, furniture pieces and artwork, however individually spectacular, all combine in harmony to create an extremely comfortable living space.
This first room is on two levels with the first being dominated by a phenomenal wooden dining table which is dressed with an array of fresh flowers in beautiful vases. Presiding over this space is a traditional chandelier hanging from the stunning coffered ceiling; with each of the shaped panels being wood-lined.
The wall running parallel to the dining table is has 3D effect wall panel with handmade geometric carvings set in white onto a deep maroon coloured backdrop.
At one end of the table is a recessed golden archway housing an antique cabinet and an absolutely amazing statue of the Thai mythological serpent, Naga.
On the opposite wall is a similar golden alcove with an intricately painted wooden cabinet and a Verdi Gris sun framed mirror.
To the left of this dining space is the appropriately positioned kitchen. High quality traditionally styled wooden units are brought up to date with black granite surfaces, chrome fixtures and fittings, a large central island feature and cutting-edge metallic tiling.
The only wall without units is decorated in unusual Thai artworks depicting ornate candelabras, and there’s a door which leads out into a covered outdoor kitchen area and herb garden.
Coming back into the dining room two large pillars create the entrance way to the lower level. A sloping wooden ceiling covers this comfortable space. On one side of the pillars a wooden sofa is covered in the finest Thai silks, on the other there’s an antique leather-bound desk with a traditionally shaped table lamp, glazed in a very modern striped pattern. Behind the desk and facing the opening glass doors which line the front of this room is a true work of art.
A Thai canvas mural is spread over six wooden panels and shows a brightly coloured contemporary image of ancient Thailand with a scene of elephants, monkeys, and happy Thai people near to a temple.
Across the front of this room is a large sun terrace with sun-loungers and access to one side of the blue-tiled infinity swimming pool, which has uninterrupted views over the picturesque Koh Matlang island, and the swathe of white sand linking that island to Koh Samui at low tide.
To the right of the terrace is the dramatic main lounge. This is an architecturally unique room as it stands out on the rear of the property overlooking the pool and the sala. Built-in wooden bench seating wraps around three sides of the room and has been fitted with lush comfortable cushions.
The seating layout, around a large central coffee table, makes this the perfect room for socialising. There’s also a large flat screen TV facing the seating area for when the conversation runs dry. And it’s on this wall where the sense of drama comes in. The TV is mounted on a wall of textured wallpaper and framed by an oversized, wooden contemporary-styled Thai archway.
As your eyes follow this immense feature you become aware of the height of this unusual room. An incredibly high ceiling with open wood work, allowing the light in, gives the room a tangible character and this whole space has a light and enjoyable atmosphere.
The corridor leads to the master-suite on the left and this room epitomises traditional style, elegance and good taste. A giant teak four-poster bed is the main focus of the room, but once again, the details in the wall coverings, the walk-in dressing area, the lamps, the antiques and the exceptional décor and furniture, such as a leather bound bench at the foot of the bed and an ornate birdcage sat on a pedestal table in one corner, all stand out. From here you have a private terrace and direct access into the poolside sala and private steps into the tempting infinity pool.
Doors open into an exquisite bathroom suite where you’re greeted by a wooden vanity unit with ceramic sink, a crystal chandelier sits majestically above and intricate carved niches, and shaped wooden panelling leads you through to the sunken Jacuzzi bathtub and rain-shower feature.
Coming back into the corridor you have a further doorway into another en-suite bedroom. There’s a separate walk-in dressing area and the bathroom has an outdoor natural rock wall, a covered shower area and an unusually shaped white sink set onto a black granite surface.
The bedroom has a high-vaulted wooden ceiling and yet another unique chandelier. The bed is a wooden four-poster finished with stunning white and flower patterned drapes.
The wall behind the bed is a rich purple with small golden alcoves for ornaments, the one opposite is lined with golden silk, wooden frames and tinted mirrors, and has a flat screen TV.
When you emerge back through the dining area and out into the open courtyard, there’s a covered staircase on your right taking you up to the next level. The above terrace has a sloping wooden roof illuminated by a row of crystal hanging lights.
Another wooden doorway opens into an indulgent and luxurious lounge area. Leather sofas with silk cushions, coffee coloured walls with hand painted golden detailing, a flat screen TV fitted into a shaped wooden panelled alcove and a bronze coloured coffee table on a green rug all add to the plush and comfortable surrounding
On either side of this lounge there’s an en-suite bedroom. On the left the room has a four-poster bed with silk drapes, a vaulted wooden ceiling and a balcony looking out across the ocean. And, the en-suite shower room has some very distinctive black and grey tiling.
On the right, the en-suite bedroom has a balcony overlooking the pool, sala and out across the ocean. The wall behind the bed is silk-lined with an extraordinary circular wooden carving mounted above the bed.
Coming back down stairs and from the sun terrace and the pool area, a pathway leads down between the other two villas to a very secluded rocky bay and almost completely private beach.
This villa is a totally unique property based, not only on its location and design style, but also because of the incredible interior designs, handmade features, and the diverse collection of antiques, art and furniture, which provide genuine touches of pure Thai elegance.
Mei
This Chinese-style villa has the very essence of the Chinese culture embedded in every carefully planned and impeccably designed detail; in every room throughout the whole property.
The quality of the furniture, the architectural features and the materials used all follow the theme of luxury and authenticity. You approach the villa via the meandering stone path which leads you through the three properties completing this prestigious estate.
Villa Mei sits on the left of the path which takes you past the first pavilion sitting behind the main villa. This houses a private double en-suite bedroom and offers extra privacy from the main villa.
Inside you’ll find a wooden vaulted ceiling, rich wooden floors and contrasting white walls. A contemporarily designed Chinese-style four poster bed sits against a modern blue and white feature wall. Crystal chandeliers continue the mix of old and new styles and the room has a very fresh feel to it. The en-suite houses a walk-in shower.
Approaching the main villa, the first room you come to is an incredibly eye-catching open-plan dining and lounge area. This elevated room is exquisitely furnished and benefits from detailed black slate tiles with an ornate white design. A ten-seater dining table dominates the first space. There are less contemporary touches in this room, as it is very much focussed on traditional comfort and quality. Antique cabinets and serving trays, complement comfortable lounge furniture.
This room has a covered terrace with built-in seating running along the right hand side, from where you can enjoy views across the gardens and out to the ocean. Opening glass doors separate the room from the terrace and also provide view points at either end of the room.
At the far end doors open to a walkway which leads past a small garden on the left and an infinity edged pool which overflows in a waterfall feature into the main pool below. Looking across this top pool provides uninterrupted sea views over to the picturesque island of Koh Matlang.
Steps take you into a small alcove which is lined in deep purple three dimensional tiles. Doors on either side of the alcove lead to bedrooms. The one on the right has a white four-poster bed, private terrace with seating, and a stunning en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and a sunken viewpoint bathtub.
The room on the left also has a four-poster bed which sits in front of an incredible circular red and dark wood wall feature. There is also a private terrace and an en-suite with an enormous walk-in shower.
Both of these rooms blend modern and traditional features within the styling of the furniture and the use of bold colours, whilst retaining the Chinese theme in every detail from the intricate wood panelling to the wallpaper patterns.
Steps from the alcove lead down to the pool area and the master-suite. The pool from above falls over a walkway, creating a grotto like feeling as you walk through the stone pillars, and into the large blue tiled pool below.
This terrace lined pool is a real communal feature with a covered poolside sala providing a place to relax, dine or simply escape the Samui heat without having to go indoors. Steps behind the sala lead down into the gardens and through to the beach.
This whole level is elevated above the gardens adding to the overall feeling of privacy, and the poolside terrace is ideal for private sunbathing or for enjoying an evening barbecue.
Set behind the pool is the master-suite. The epitome of indulgence sees you enter a lounge where, once again modern elements, such as the 50 inch TV and contemporary sofa, blend with traditional Chinese décor and antique cabinets and accessories.
Two double doors on either side of the rear of the lounge open into the bedroom whilst a door on the right gives access to the en-suite bathroom. When you walk into the bedroom the first thing you notice is the four-poster bed with Chinese temple styled wooden frame. The walls are line with high quality bamboo and double doors open into the en-suite bathroom.
The bathroom has a regal air with a dark wood dressing area, twin sinks on separate pedestals, a walk-in shower and to complete the ensemble, a bathtub sat in front of opening windows which looks out across the ocean.
Returning upstairs to the lounge dining area, to the left of this is a path which leads to the first functional kitchen and then into the main villa kitchen with central island feature and a light fitting which completely transforms the whole room when in use. And, off the kitchen is another private terraced area.
This villa is elegant and stylish with flexible accommodation options to make it ideal for families and friends who wish to share the facilities whilst retaining their own private space.
Lotus
This Indian influenced villa has some interesting and unique architectural features to allow for the natural topography of the location. In fact the entrance hallway leads into the open-plan lounge and dining area which forms a bridge-like structure spanning a natural dip in the landscape.
On entering the hallway the first piece of furniture you notice is an antique cabinet made from and incorporating designs of cutlasses. The style and quality of this first item is reflected throughout.
To the right of the entrance is a guest bathroom and straight ahead is an almost cathedral-like space. Glass windows span both sides of the room, which lies parallel to the ocean giving excellent views of the grounds and the sea beyond. The intricate wooden ceiling design is like nothing else on Samui.
Leather armchairs and sofas provide a sophisticated elegance which is mirrored in the dark wood dining table, the woven rugs and the carved wooden cabinets. Everywhere you look you recognise genuine quality and attention to detail.
The internal aesthetics may be exceptional but it is the natural beauty of the view which really brings this room to life.
Beyond the dining area there is a serving kitchen and then a hallway which links the rest of the rooms on this level. A hatch in the serving kitchen faces the door to the villa’s main kitchen which is extremely well appointed with white units topped with black granite surfaces.
To the right of this is the first bedroom suite. In here you’ll find a beautifully designed en-suite shower room and a four-poster bed. Above the bed hangs a very unusual and eye-catching light feature.
Coming back passed the kitchen entrance; the hallway takes you down a couple of steps and on the right is the next bedroom. A white wall lined with shaped alcoves sits directly behind the bed and creates an impressive feature. The main talking point in this room however, is a carved archway leading through to a hanging swing bench which sits facing the views across the pool and out across the sea to Koh Matlang. There’s also a stunning en-suite with a walk-in shower room.
Coming out of this room you will find the third bedroom on this level to your right. Once again the carved archways which guide you through this property are a feature to draw the attention and provide authentic Indian styling. With views over the pool, the gardens and the beach this is the proverbial room with a view, and just so that the view remains your permanent focus, the en-suite features a large shower area also overlooking the picture-perfect beach scene.
From the hallway a marble staircase leads down to the pool level and the palatial master-suite. The ceiling of the stairway features an intricate wooden design, similar to that in the lounge and dining room and, even in this effectively functional staircase, no opportunity has been missed to showcase the view or to create stunning internal decorations to be admired.
On the left a wall of glass keeps the view in focus and also showcases the archway under the lounge/dining room. Doors at the foot of the stairs lead directly out onto the pool terrace and the right wall is lined with luxurious golden wallpaper.
At the bottom of the stairs a door on the right opens into the master-lounge. Cream furniture on rich wooden floors makes a comfortable yet sophisticated room to be enjoyed. Doors at the front open onto the pool terrace whilst doors at the rear of the room lead the way to the bedroom. The bed is designed around an ancient Indian ship with carved wooden legs and headboard. Behind the bed, the wall is shaped into an alcove with mosaic wall-tiling filling the inset.
On the right of the bed is a walk-in dressing area with doors opening out into the gardens. On the left is the en-suite bathroom. In here white twin-sinks sit on black polished surfaces, a marble lined walk-in shower is at one end and at the other steps lead you up and into a sunken bathtub. Doors beyond the bathtub open to reveal the view over the pool terrace and out to the ocean.
In front of the master-suite there’s a large stone terrace and a blue-tiled infinity swimming pool complete with a poolside sala offering ideal outdoor dining options. In front of the pool, manicured gardens lead directly onto the beach.
This villa is an extraordinary property and like the others on the Pawanthorn estate, it is completely unique. It has a hand-built quality and provides a feeling that you’re experiencing something extremely special.
